Obtaining the certification is a key milestone towards sustainable development, a policy that the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer kick-started in 2007 by setting up its first environmental charter. The Group has confirmed this commitment by signing a second environmental charter in December and by implementing the environmental charters in its main establishments according to their specificities.
Since October 2013, the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort has set up the Bay Be Green Team, a team dedicated to organising and implementing the hotel’s environmental policy.
In February 2014, the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort set up its own environmental charter consisting of 37 actions such as installing 100% energy-saving light bulbs, electric vehicle charging stations, water conservation and waste management.
“Ecology concerns us all! With the help of all staff members here at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, we must act now and help bring about lifestyle and behavioural changes in order to protect our environment and ensure its sustainability over time. If we don’t act quickly and effectively, the environmental standards that we just implemented, such as Green Globe, will be soon forgotten!”, insists Sergio Mangini, Director of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort.
Since June 2013, the Monte-Carlo Beach Relais et Châteaux has its own charter, bringing together 35 actions in environmental management and certifications, the most noteworthy being: “Beach goes Bio!”
With the help of the newly obtained Ecocert Level 3 100% organically grown restaurant business certification for the recently Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant Elsa, Chef Paolo Sari proposes entirely organic menus favouring locally produced fruits and vegetables. As of today, 90% of the ingredients used in all the other places that serve food at the Monte-Carlo Beach Resort are organically grown. “In the short term, our aim is to make the Monte-Carlo Beach the first hotel to be eco-certified 100% organic in all its food services: gastronomic restaurant, room service, minibar and hotel bar”, says Danièle Garcelon, Director of the Monte-Carlo Beach.
Finally, the Monte-Carlo Beach has opted for respectful energy management, especially by purchasing renewable energy for 100% of its electricity consumption from EDF. Moreover, customers also have access to eco-friendly transport in the form of an electric bicycle station that has been set up.
The demanding criteria of the prestigious international Green Globe label confirm the green stance of the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer on sustainable tourism in all of its establishments.
Green Globe is an internationally recognised certification programme designed for the travel and luxury tourism industry. Its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) standards are applicable to several types of structures such as resorts, spas and casinos.
This certification has four categories of requirements: management of sustainable development, social and economic aspects, cultural heritage and the environment. There are 321 indicators used to evaluate each establishment’s approach to encouraging sustainable development. A total of 179 points, of which 64 are mandatory, are necessary to obtain the certification. Different evaluation criteria cover a variety of areas such as employee training, sustainable construction, sorting waste, waste reduction at the source, biodiversity, customer satisfaction and accessibility to the establishment for persons with reduced mobility.
The two Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer establishments met 70% of the criteria. Because the Green Globe certification is part of a continuous improvement plan, an action plan will be implemented to pursue the programme’s aims.
All of these actions are part of the sustainable development strategy of the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer which echoes the Principality’s efforts to adopt an actively responsible approach, demonstrating its commitments towards sustainable development and promoting these commitments to customers and partners.
